Need to Know
Important tips and guidelines before you go on the tour.
Dos in Japan
- Stick to the schedule as much as possible to make the most of your sightseeing and activities.
- Respect local customs and traditions: Bow when greeting people, remove shoes when entering certain establishments like ryokans or temples, and be mindful of cultural sensitivities.
- Carry cash — while credit cards are widely accepted, especially in cities, having cash is useful for smaller shops, restaurants, and personal expenses.
- Try local cuisine — Japan is known for its delicious food. Explore different dishes such as sushi, ramen, tempura, and traditional kaiseki meals.
- Wear comfortable shoes — you'll be doing a fair amount of walking, especially in places like temples and parks.
- Learn a few basic phrases in Japanese — even simple greetings like “Konnichiwa” (Hello) and “Arigatou Gozaimasu” (Thank You) can go a long way in connecting with locals.
- Carry a portable Wi-Fi device or SIM card — stay connected for navigation, translation, and communication purposes.
Don'ts in Japan
- Tipping — it’s not customary in Japan and may be considered rude. Excellent service is already included in the price.
- Talk loudly in public places — Japanese culture values politeness and quietness, especially in public transportation, restaurants, and other public spaces.
- Forget to take off your shoes — follow local customs in ryokans, traditional inns, and sometimes in restaurants.
- Eat or drink while walking — this is generally frowned upon. Find a designated area or bench to enjoy your food or drinks.
- Point — pointing at people or things is considered impolite. Instead, use an open hand or gesture gently.
- Use your phone in certain places — avoid using your phone in temples, museums, and other quiet areas where it might disturb others.
- Expect everyone to speak English — many people in tourist areas do, but don’t assume. Use simple English or try basic Japanese phrases.
- Leave tips in hotel rooms — unlike some countries, leaving money behind is not customary in Japan and could cause confusion or offense.
